How to Turn Your Passion into a Profitable Online Course
For three years, I thought about creating a course and leaving my 9-5 job, but I never took the leap.
Then, 2020 hit, and I was forced to take action. I launched my first course on directing film, and within just 90 days, I was able to hit a six-figure run rate and finally quit my job.
This experience didn’t just give me financial security; it transformed my life. I went from struggling to get my vision seen to being recognized as a leader and expert in my field.
Instead of chasing opportunities, top people in the industry came to me, wanting to collaborate and work on projects that aligned with my vision.
For the first time, I had the creative freedom to choose the work I loved without the constraints of traditional jobs or the pressure to take on projects I didn’t believe in.
I was living a life true to my passions and values—turning what I loved into a stable, predictable income that allowed me to live comfortably and confidently pursue my dreams.
Today, I want to show you how you can do the same.

The 4 Steps To Launch Your Course This Week
1. List Your Micro-Offers
Action Step 1: Identify Specific Problems or Skills
Write down 10 specific problems you’ve solved or skills you’ve mastered. Go beyond broad topics like…
❌ “learn filmmaking”
and narrow down to micro-niches like:
✅ “How to Direct Actors for Emotional Scenes”
or
✅ “Low-Budget Lighting Techniques for Indie Films.”
I started with "learn filmmaking" and refined it to "Make your movie with no budget."
Action Step 2: Identify Overlooked Skills
Ask 5 close friends or colleagues: “What’s something I’m good at that I might overlook?”
Often, skills that come naturally to you—like organizing complex projects or explaining difficult concepts simply—are highly valuable to others.
Remember, you don’t have to be Michael Jordan at something. If you’re a level 4 at a skill, all the level 1, 2, and 3s out there would find your knowledge highly valuable!
Also, you probably take your skills for granted and do not realize their true value to others.
Action Step 3: Evaluate Demand with Keyword Research
Use a tool like Google Keyword Planner or AnswerThePublic to determine what specific terms people search for in your niche.
For example, if your niche is “directing films,” look for search terms like “how to direct actors without experience” or “film lighting techniques for beginners.”
Example:
Instead of creating a general course on “filmmaking,” create one on “Directing Actors for Indie Films: From Casting to Final Cut.”
This is for aspiring directors who are intimidated by working with actors and want a clear step-by-step guide from someone who’s been there.
You’re looking for answers to three questions:
1. What is the core desire of your potential client?
2. What is the #1 thing blocking them?
3. What blockers have others failed to help them remove?
When I started, I spent an hour dropping questions or polls in 20 different directing Facebook groups.
I asked different questions to find the answers to these three key questions.
One crucial question is, "What have you tried before, and why didn’t it work?" This tells you what people desire that doesn’t exist.
I found that people didn’t desire to “learn filmmaking”; they wanted to make their movie.
And they believed they couldn’t do it with no budget.
This is something I can easily solve with my knowledge of directing.
Now, I have a monopoly.
Martin Scorsese and other world-famous directors have courses, but none of them address this problem.
People don’t care that I’m not famous—they care that someone understands their problems and proposes a solution.
That’s how you make 7 figures from your laptop.
2. Validate Your Course Idea
Action Step 1: Create a Landing Page with a Pre-Sell Offer
Create a simple page describing your course concept. Include a clear value proposition like “Learn to direct your movie with no budget,” a bullet-point outline of what students will learn, and a “Pre-order Now” button.
Action Step 2: Sell Your Pre-Launch
Did you know that Tesla sold 3 million Cyber Trucks before ever building one?
Or that Taylor Swift sold $26 million in presale tickets for the Eras Tour recording before it even came out?
Pre-launching is crucial in course creation.
You learn what your audience wants, build a better product for them, and avoid spending 12 months creating a course that no one buys (I’ve done this before).
Start selling the beta version at a discounted rate.
Teach live on Zoom, conduct the course, and get feedback. Ask specific questions after each session, such as, “Was this lesson clear?” and “Does this push you closer to your goal?” or “What would you like to see next time?”
Action Step 3: Use Social Proof to Build Credibility
Document the beta testers’ progress publicly. Share their testimonials, challenges, and breakthroughs on your social media. For example, share a before-and-after story: “Tom had never directed a film before. After 3 weeks, he completed his first short film and was admitted to a film festival.”
3. Create a High-Impact Curriculum
Action Step 1: A to B (Not A to Z)
Write a one-sentence transformation statement:
“This course will take you from [pain point/starting position] to [desired outcome].”
For example, “This course will take you from no idea how to create your movie to a confident director who can produce an award-winning film regardless of budget.”
Action Step 2: Reverse Engineer the Curriculum
Start with the end goal and break it down into 3-5 major milestones
(e.g., story structure, telling the story shot-by-shot, telling the story with the camera, how to shoot your movie).
Don’t overcomplicate it—everyone tries to create a super complex course. Make the smallest course possible that still provides the transformation.
Remember: Focus on getting students from A to B NOT A to Z.
Break each milestone into specific, actionable lessons. Each lesson should answer a single question like, “How do I storyboard effectively?”
4. Launch and Grow Your Course
Action Step 1: Collect and Implement Feedback
After doing live training with your initial students, send out a survey with questions like “What was the most valuable part of today’s session?” and “What’s one thing you wish was covered in more detail?” Use the feedback to adjust your upcoming lessons in real time.
Action Step 2: Turn It into an Evergreen Course
Record your live sessions, edit them into polished video lessons, and upload them onto a course platform.
Create an automated email sequence for new students, guiding them through the course and reminding them of key milestones.
The more people use your course…The bigger their results will be
The more they will know, like, and trust you
This will lead to better testimonials
And more future sales.
Example:
During your live webinar, use a case study of a student who went from zero experience to directing their first short film. Break down their journey, showing clips of their work and what they learned at each stage. Then, offer the recorded version of this webinar as a bonus for anyone who enrolls in the course.
Use “Scarcity and Urgency” to drive enrollments. Offer limited-time bonuses like a 1-on-1 coaching call or a live Q&A session for the first 10 sign-ups. This creates immediate demand and incentivizes people to join. But more importantly, when you're early in creating your course, talking with your ideal clients will be invaluable in helping you shape your course and how you communicate it to the marketplace.
I could go on about this for hours, but the main takeaway is this:
Just start helping people.
You will learn exactly the most valuable thing to create when you do this.
DO NOT spend 6 months building the “perfect course”.
Ironically, you can only build the perfect course by rapidly assembling an offer to help people this week.
Then, over time, you can build your course bigger and better while you help people get the desired results.
